Last night I confirmed that I am a bike novice. I went to add more air to my tires and I noticed that the air valve looked different than your typical tire valve. I messed around with it trying to figure out how to add air and I managed to let all of the air out (not my best moment). After calling a friend of mine who is also doing this triathlon filled me in that road bikes utilize “presta” valves which are unlike the valves on regular bikes and/or car tires. I was impressed that he knew that until he told me he did the same thing I did last week and the guy at the bike shop explained everything to him. Apparently if you have an old pump (which I do), you need a special adapter to add air to road bikes. It was about 8pm and my local bike shop was closed so needless to say, I did not ride this morning.
I did go for a 4 mile run and I followed it up with swimming 100 laps (3/4 mile) in my pool! It sounds great (to me anyways) but I count each way (40 feet) a lap. About three weeks ago, I swam this many laps so this is my second time accomplishing it. Seeing that the swim portion of the race will be in the ocean, my plan is to go for an ocean swim in two days so I know what to expect during the triathlon. I am thinking an ocean swim is going to be much more difficult but I had heard mixed opinions on it so time will tell in regards to my opinion…
Chest & Back – Not only has this been my favorite routine for a while now, I can honestly say I enjoy doing it…can’t really say that for some of the others though
I wore my 40lb exercise vest for the first half and took it off for the second. It might be from all the carbs I ate when I was camping but I had plenty of energy and felt very strong throughout this whole routine. My plan is to do the same bike/run/swim workout I have done in the past tomorrow morning but with a goal of improving my 1 hour 8 minute time…
This past weekend (camping) was so relaxing it was very tough to get motivated to exercise this morning. I was lying in bed thinking of excuses to skip it. What finally got me out of bed was thinking how bad my nutrition was while I was camping. I felt like it was mandatory to start the week off strong so I got up.
I ended up doing a bike/run/swim workout. I changed up my route a bit which made the run about 4 miles but the transition to run to swim took about 5 minutes so you could call that a small break.
I hope I wake up with a lot more motivation to workout tomorrow morning. I feel like I am still dragging from the weekend I had. My goal for the week is to eat well and exercise every morning, this weekend is 4th of July so that might be a different story…
My wife just called me “psycho” when I told her my workout, I laughed and took it as a compliment…
I took today off from work so I woke up a bit later than I normally do. Knowing that my nutrition is going to be pretty bad this weekend (camping), I wanted to finish the week with another solid workout.
I started by completing “core synergistics”, then I went for a 2 mile run…and finished with a 1/3 mile swim in my pool. I did not time myself so it wasn’t too intense of a workout but I am happy with it!
The biggest motivation that I use to workout hard during the week is to enjoy my weekends. I am a person that appreciates cold beer and appetizer-type foods every so often….both are not the best when trying to get lean. If you are not satisfied with your body fat percentage, do not follow my lead (cheat on your nutrtion). If you get to a point that your goal is just to maintain your results, 1-2 cheat meals a week should be fine assuming you are still working out 4-5 days a week.
The triathlon will be here in 24 days so starting next week, I am going tighten up on my nutrition and only allow myself one cheat meal a week. I want to get a bit leaner figuring it will only make the race easier to complete.
time to camp…
Completed another tri-workout (9 mile bike, 3.1 mile run, 1/3 mile swim) this morning, I feel great when I complete this routine. Prior to P90X, I would consider the bike, run and swim all separate workouts so it’s a good feeling when I complete all three together. I shaved 3 seconds off my time from the other day.
I am taking the day off from work tomorrow to go camping with the family this weekend. My goal is to do “core synergisitcs” followed by a swim in the morning before we leave…

fightFAT: Chris - My P90X MASS routine would be perfect for you. To be honest, I thought I was going to bulk up more (physically) but it did not work out that way. What ended up happening was an increase in lean muscle. This makes sense but I also saw a significant increase with my strength. Again, my goal was to bulk up but I did not consume enough calories to make it happen. At the time, I just finished P90X doubles where I lost 27lbs so I was a bit hesitant on eating too much as I did not want to gain the weight back I just lost. Oddly enough, I have no desire to bulk up anymore…I have the same goal as you, building lean muscle. If I wasn't going to be training for my upcoming triathlons, I would be doing P90X MASS myself. I have received tons of emails claiming how effective it has been for different people. Good Luck
Chris: Hey, I just found this blog and am looking for some solid, experienced, advice. I have two rounds of P90X down and am on my final week of Insanity. Now I want to put on some lean mass and I've been considering either P90X Mass or more of a 5x5 plan. I'm trying to comb through your blog for results of your Mass circuit and can't find it. Do you have any before/after information (or other info) to help me pick a workout to do next? Thanks, C
fightFAT: Following P90X with Insanity is very impressive, good for you. I would definitely bring over Ab Ripper X if you are up for it. I initially thought that myself but never followed through with it. Good luck
Matt: Hey dude, I had a question for you. I'm wrapping up round 2 of P90X in a few weeks and starting Insanity right after. I'm really loving my upper body after P90X and I've decided I'm going to keep doing the resistance workouts from Days 1 and 3 of the week along with Insanity. My question is, what are your thoughts on bringing ab ripper with me too? I know Insanity doesn't have too much resistance work, but I know it has a lot of ab stuff which is why I'm wondering. Congrats on the progress man, and thanks for the info! -Matt
fightFAT: There is no harm in hitting pause and/or taking breaks so my recommendation is to stick with insanity. As you continue to workout, you will not only see improvement but eventually be able to keep up with the video.
