Back & Bi’s – I had a solid workout this morning. It’s funny, I can do 20 pull-ups on my first set but I would be lucky to do 6-8 every set after that….some sets just 3-4 pull-ups. I am not sure where P90X found the people in the videos but they all seem to be pull-up freaks. I have to laugh when Tony claims during the last set of max pull-ups, “if you feel good, do the one you don’t like”…I still have not met a person that feels good at the end of this workout as far as pull-ups go…I guess I am just jealous!
I had about 15 minutes to spare before getting ready for work so I went for a quick 2 mile run. I was toast by the end but I am glad I did it. I am still taking the P90X Recovery Drink and there is nothing better to have when you feel wiped out. I honestly think it’s legiate and it does help me get ready for an intense workout the following day.
Best tri-workout to-date! I completed a 9 mile bike, 3.1 mile run, and 1/3 swim in 1 hour 8 minutes and 45 seconds…shaving about a minute off my previous best time.
I do expect to make improvements every time I complete this routine but the last two attempts I had on this exact workout, I either cut it short from feeling fatigue or my time was off as my 4 year old saw me in transition (run to swim) and wanted to talk to me for a bit. My plan is to do P90X Back & Bi’s tomorrow and I may piggyback another swim onto it if I feel up for it…
26 days to go, BRING IT!
Chest, Shoulders, & Tris - I did not wear the exercise vest this morning so I was able to bang out a lot more reps than I normally do. I am going to start switching up my P90X routines weekly now. I am going to do “Chest & Back” next week and then this one the following week after that. I have been committing myself to a specific workout 3-4 weeks in a row which is fine but I decided to change it up a bit and alternate every week. I am going to do the same with the “Back & Bi” and “Shoulders & Arms” routines…
I swapped out ARX with swimming this morning. I hit the pool following chest, shoulders, and tris routine and swam 1/3 mile…which only takes 10 minutes or so
Again ,my goal is to get in 5 great workouts this week…one down, four to go!
I did not have a chance to post yesterday but I did do a tri-workout.
9 mile bike – 3 mile run – 1/3 mile swim
On my way to the pool from my run, my 4 year old saw me as I was walking on the deck right outside my kitchen. He’s too young to understand that I was in the middle of exercising so I could not just ignore him without feeling guilty about it so I ended up taking a 5 minute break to talk to him…then finished my workout in the pool.
I am not planning on exercising today (Sunday) but my goal is to have 5 solid days of intense workouts starting tomorrow…
My workout defeated me this morning. My plan was to do another tri-workout (9 mile bike, 3 mile run, and a 1/3 mile swim). As gratifying as this workout is when it’s over, it’s tough to motivated myself to get out of bed early to do it. Let’s face it, I can think of thousands of things I rather be doing than wake up at 5am and do a bike/run/swim workout…
I did get up and started my bike ride which went well. I then started my 3.1 mile run loop. I felt like I hit a wall after the first mile or so and was actually thinking about stopping….but quickly thought to myself it was not an option so I continued on. The 3 mile loop I usually run passes my house at the two mile mark but I usually continue on and run another mile to make it 3 miles…not this time, I just stopped at my house. Even though I completed a 9 mile bike ride and a 2 mile run, I did not reach my goal so I was disappointed with that. I always have a whey protein shake before the P90X workouts so I am going to start having one before my bike/run/swim workouts with hopes that I will have enough energy to always complete it. I am not sure if that was the reason why I had no gas in the tank or not as I completed this same workout on an empty stomach twice in the past. At the end of the day, I am satisfied that I did do something…but I am determined to complete this workout from start to finish asap.
Game 7 is tonight and I am definitely watching the whole game no matter what the score is. Knowing it’s going to be a late night, I am not even going to pretend that I might exercise so I am going to call tomorrow a rest day. I hope to get in a good workout on Saturday morning (maybe bike/run/swim)…

fightFAT: Chris - My P90X MASS routine would be perfect for you. To be honest, I thought I was going to bulk up more (physically) but it did not work out that way. What ended up happening was an increase in lean muscle. This makes sense but I also saw a significant increase with my strength. Again, my goal was to bulk up but I did not consume enough calories to make it happen. At the time, I just finished P90X doubles where I lost 27lbs so I was a bit hesitant on eating too much as I did not want to gain the weight back I just lost. Oddly enough, I have no desire to bulk up anymore…I have the same goal as you, building lean muscle. If I wasn't going to be training for my upcoming triathlons, I would be doing P90X MASS myself. I have received tons of emails claiming how effective it has been for different people. Good Luck
Chris: Hey, I just found this blog and am looking for some solid, experienced, advice. I have two rounds of P90X down and am on my final week of Insanity. Now I want to put on some lean mass and I've been considering either P90X Mass or more of a 5x5 plan. I'm trying to comb through your blog for results of your Mass circuit and can't find it. Do you have any before/after information (or other info) to help me pick a workout to do next? Thanks, C
fightFAT: Following P90X with Insanity is very impressive, good for you. I would definitely bring over Ab Ripper X if you are up for it. I initially thought that myself but never followed through with it. Good luck
Matt: Hey dude, I had a question for you. I'm wrapping up round 2 of P90X in a few weeks and starting Insanity right after. I'm really loving my upper body after P90X and I've decided I'm going to keep doing the resistance workouts from Days 1 and 3 of the week along with Insanity. My question is, what are your thoughts on bringing ab ripper with me too? I know Insanity doesn't have too much resistance work, but I know it has a lot of ab stuff which is why I'm wondering. Congrats on the progress man, and thanks for the info! -Matt
fightFAT: There is no harm in hitting pause and/or taking breaks so my recommendation is to stick with insanity. As you continue to workout, you will not only see improvement but eventually be able to keep up with the video.
