Well, I felt like I needed to redeem myself after cutting my last brick workout short 2 miles the other day…and I did just that!
This morning’s tri-workout (bike/run/swim) is one of my best workouts I have had since completing the first triathlon. It started with a 12 mile bike ride at a great pace. I was then determined to follow it up with a 4 mile run, not 2. I felt great right out of the gate (which is not the norm) so I started out a decent pace. After 2 miles, I felt even better so I picked up the pace a bit and continued on to run another 2.3 miles. I then finished the day with a 1/3 mile swim in my pool.
Overall, I biked 12 miles, ran 4.3 miles, and swam 1/3 mile.
I hope to have another workout like this in two days but I will not rule out another brick tomorrow if I feel up for it…
We had a babysitter on Saturday night so the wife and I ended up meeting two other couples for dinner and drinks(SULL was there, see pic above). It turned into a late night (2am) but to my surprise I woke up feeling great and ready to go. I had a small window to workout in the morning so I banged out core synergisitcs while I had the chance. I am glad I did because I missed my workout this morning and I rarely can squeeze it in when I get home, nor am I up for exercising after work…so I am going to call today a rest day
Well, had basically a non-existent work-out week. After doing Plyo last Sunday my legs were killing me for three days. Plus, I was travelling so it was pretty easy to convince myself to skip my workouts. Not good.
Got back at it today. I was hoping to get in a brick this morning, but my wife was heading out so I didn’t have enough time. I did however get in a solid 12.5 mile bike ride with a couple of good hills (nothing crazy). Felt good to get back on the bike, as I was finally able to change the flat tire. I was determined to do it myself, so that is why it has taken me 3+ weeks to get it fixed (didn’t have a new tube).
So, basically there are two weeks to go and I don’t have to travel at all. I am going to do all I can to work hard towards the race. Last time I really let off the gas on the week heading into the Tri. Going to try a different approach this time and try to train hard right up to the race, with a rest day on the Friday before. We’ll see what happens. Either a longer run or a brick tomorrow, depending on how I feel, as I am heading to the UFC tonight, so definitely will have a few beers.
I should be happy with the brick workout I just completed but I claimed I was going to run 4 miles and I only did 2. I did the same brick route as the other day, 12 mile bike ride followed by a 2 mile run. Not sure why I cut it short either, felt pretty good…I guess I was not determined to add another 2 miles.
I don’t think I can improve my cardiovascular endurance anymore than where it’s at right now seeing that there is only 13 days left to train. What I can do is become stronger mentally though. No matter if you are in unbelievable shape or terrible shape, you should feel dead during a triathlon if you push yourself hard enough. I feel you need to be mentally strong to push yourself hard enough to complete any fitness event (road race, triathlon, etc…) to the best of your physical ability. Personally, I feel like I had more mental toughness leading into the first triathlon. After all, I did just cut my workout short today for no apparent reason. I know I have it in me though so my goal is to push myself to the limit during my upcoming brick workouts. My plan is to do 3 brick workouts next week so lets see what happens…
I realized this morning that I still very much enjoy ALL of the strength training P90X workouts. I have not done the legs and back routine in months but I have been cycling and running so I seem to always prioritize an upper body P90X workout over the others…so the legs and back routine never makes the schedule. This morning I completed “chest & back” and I felt great during and after it. I wore the exercise vest the first half and took it off the second. I banged out 22 pull-ups the other day on my first set but seeing that I had the 40lb vest on, I was only able to complete 6. During the second half when the vest came off, I was in the 7-10 range but I was toast by then.
I hope to get in another brick (bike/run) workout tomorrow morning…

fightFAT: Chris - My P90X MASS routine would be perfect for you. To be honest, I thought I was going to bulk up more (physically) but it did not work out that way. What ended up happening was an increase in lean muscle. This makes sense but I also saw a significant increase with my strength. Again, my goal was to bulk up but I did not consume enough calories to make it happen. At the time, I just finished P90X doubles where I lost 27lbs so I was a bit hesitant on eating too much as I did not want to gain the weight back I just lost. Oddly enough, I have no desire to bulk up anymore…I have the same goal as you, building lean muscle. If I wasn't going to be training for my upcoming triathlons, I would be doing P90X MASS myself. I have received tons of emails claiming how effective it has been for different people. Good Luck
Chris: Hey, I just found this blog and am looking for some solid, experienced, advice. I have two rounds of P90X down and am on my final week of Insanity. Now I want to put on some lean mass and I've been considering either P90X Mass or more of a 5x5 plan. I'm trying to comb through your blog for results of your Mass circuit and can't find it. Do you have any before/after information (or other info) to help me pick a workout to do next? Thanks, C
fightFAT: Following P90X with Insanity is very impressive, good for you. I would definitely bring over Ab Ripper X if you are up for it. I initially thought that myself but never followed through with it. Good luck
Matt: Hey dude, I had a question for you. I'm wrapping up round 2 of P90X in a few weeks and starting Insanity right after. I'm really loving my upper body after P90X and I've decided I'm going to keep doing the resistance workouts from Days 1 and 3 of the week along with Insanity. My question is, what are your thoughts on bringing ab ripper with me too? I know Insanity doesn't have too much resistance work, but I know it has a lot of ab stuff which is why I'm wondering. Congrats on the progress man, and thanks for the info! -Matt
fightFAT: There is no harm in hitting pause and/or taking breaks so my recommendation is to stick with insanity. As you continue to workout, you will not only see improvement but eventually be able to keep up with the video.
