About Me...

I consider myself an average 33 year old guy who is married with two young kids. I work full-time during the day so my plan is to start my workouts no later than 5:30am. I know this is not going to be easy but I am determined to get in the best shape of my life!

    1/2 Marathon – 7 weeks to go…

To be honest, I have been DOGGING IT during my workouts…

The only positive is I have exercised 9 out of the last 11 days. The problem is I have brought little to no intensity to each of them, I have been just going through the motions. I am in a bit of a rut with motivation right now so I blame that for the lack of intensity.  Every morning has been a battle to get out of bed to exercise since completeing the second triathlon. Lately, I HAVE been getting up to exercise so I should be happy with a ”dogging it” workout over a missed one.

Unfortunately, I don’t see my mindset changing anytime soon either. I am headed to Orlando, FL  for 4 nights next week on business travel and the wife will be joining me. Even though I will be attending work related events during the day, the night will be a different story. I am definitely NOT complaining but my wife is treating this as a mini-vacation so we plan on eating out every oppurtunity we have as well as hitting up Orlando’s nightlife in the evening (again, not complaining). Seeing that I have a ½ marathon scheduled in 7 weeks, my plan is to continue to fight through my workouts the rest of this week and early next week. Then while I am in Florida, I hope to wake up early and start each day off with a 4-6 mile morning run before getting wrapped up with work stuff that starts at 7:30am. Assuming I take full advantage of Orlando’s nightlife, it’s pretty much guaranteed that I will be waking up exhausted with a slight headache every morning  but my goal is to just suck it up and exercise through it so the trip doesn’t set me back too much.

My plan is to get back into a normal routine by stepping up my workouts and eating well starting on Monday, October 11th.  I will reach out on the 11th with my next update and hopefully a new attitidue towards working out…

BACK AT IT, ½ marathon – 8 weeks to go…

Well, if you told me last week that I would be training for a ½ marathon (13.1 miles) this week…I would have said “no chance of that happening”

OSULL (see pic above) ended up signing up for ½ marathon road race right after the completion of the 2nd triathlon. He sent out an email to the rest of us asking if anyone wanted to join him. We all pretty much said “good luck but no thanks”. Then, I started thinking about it more and figured I might as well. It will obviousuly keep me in shape and I find signing up for fitness events only helps with motivation to exercise. I made it official the other day and signed up for it. Even though I was on the fence about it at the beginning of the week , I started training for it on Monday just in case. I found an 8 week training program and tweaked it a bit to incorporate P90X, see below…

    Post-Race

Race Day has come and gone…

For starters, we had another great experience. Seeing that this was our second triathlon, we knew what to expect so I think we were able to enjoy this triathlon a bit more than the last. The atmosphere at these events are great, there are tons of spectators that support all participants which really does help you push it a bit more than you would if nobody was cheering you on. I woke up the next day knowing I am going to sign up for another and I am positive the rest of the crew feels the same. This past triathlon was our last one of the year so we have time before our next one which will be in the June/July 2011 timeframe.

    So, what’s next??

I am going to take a break from posting on this blog. I am still going to continue to exercise 5-6 days a week, my plan is to do P90X for strength training and long runs for cardio. I will reach out in October as I may start another round of my P90X MASS program. If I do this, P90X MASS will consume October, November, December and then I plan on starting the new year off with Insanity. It’s very difficult to build muscle and lose fat at the same time so I am thinking I can gain muscle with P90X MASS and then lose fat with Insanity. I will then shift my focus back to triathlon training but mix in both Insanity and P90X to keep it interesting.

Even though I am taking a break from this blog, I will continue to respond to both emails and comments.

    RACE DAY

It’s about 4:30am and I about to pick up DRISC for our 2nd Triathlon!

I will reach out with an updated post on Monday.

     BRING IT!

    2nd Triathlon – 1 day to go…

I wanted to keep the muscle loose so I went for a slow 4.5 mile bike ride and 1 mile run. I would say I completed the workout at about 70% of my normal pace so far from being intense…

The plan is to pick up DRISC at 4:45am and head to Hyannis, Ma (Cape Cod) for a 7:30am triathlon. The commute is about an hour but we need to get there a bit earlier to register. NASH and DALE are in the same boat so they are also making the morning commute. Both SULL and OSULL got hotel rooms in Hyannis so they have the luxury of registering tonight and sleeping in a bit tomorrow morning.

As much as I am ready to compete in my second triathlon, I am very much looking forward to having a few beers afterwards with the guys!

fightFAT: Chris - My P90X MASS routine would be perfect for you. To be honest, I thought I was going to bulk up more (physically) but it did not work out that way. What ended up happening was an increase in lean muscle. This makes sense but I also saw a significant increase with my strength. Again, my goal was to bulk up but I did not consume enough calories to make it happen. At the time, I just finished P90X doubles where I lost 27lbs so I was a bit hesitant on eating too much as I did not want to gain the weight back I just lost. Oddly enough, I have no desire to bulk up anymore…I have the same goal as you, building lean muscle. If I wasn't going to be training for my upcoming triathlons, I would be doing P90X MASS myself. I have received tons of emails claiming how effective it has been for different people. Good Luck

Chris: Hey, I just found this blog and am looking for some solid, experienced, advice. I have two rounds of P90X down and am on my final week of Insanity. Now I want to put on some lean mass and I've been considering either P90X Mass or more of a 5x5 plan. I'm trying to comb through your blog for results of your Mass circuit and can't find it. Do you have any before/after information (or other info) to help me pick a workout to do next? Thanks, C

fightFAT: Following P90X with Insanity is very impressive, good for you. I would definitely bring over Ab Ripper X if you are up for it. I initially thought that myself but never followed through with it. Good luck

Matt: Hey dude, I had a question for you. I'm wrapping up round 2 of P90X in a few weeks and starting Insanity right after. I'm really loving my upper body after P90X and I've decided I'm going to keep doing the resistance workouts from Days 1 and 3 of the week along with Insanity. My question is, what are your thoughts on bringing ab ripper with me too? I know Insanity doesn't have too much resistance work, but I know it has a lot of ab stuff which is why I'm wondering. Congrats on the progress man, and thanks for the info! -Matt

fightFAT: There is no harm in hitting pause and/or taking breaks so my recommendation is to stick with insanity. As you continue to workout, you will not only see improvement but eventually be able to keep up with the video.
